IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)
IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a fertility treatment in which specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. By shortening the distance the sperm must travel, IUI can improve the chance of conception.
When IUI may be considered
IUI is often discussed for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male-factor concerns, ovulation difficulties, or when donor sperm is used. Whether it is suitable depends on a full assessment of both partners.
What the process involves
A typical IUI cycle involves tracking ovulation (sometimes with medication to support it), preparing a concentrated sperm sample, and placing it into the uterus with a thin, soft catheter. The procedure itself is quick and usually painless.
